Cotton and Silk Khadi: We, at Veda, can also produce organic khadi in various counts. Khadi is a fabric made by hand-spinning threads on a ‘charkha’, these threads can be cotton, silk or wool. The fabric keeps you warm in the winter, cool in the summer and lasts for years. During India’s struggle for independence against Britain in the earlier part of the century, Mahatma Gandhi urged the people of India to weave and wear the fabric as a symbol of India’s self reliance. ‘Khadi’ represented a means to provide jobs for the unemployed rural population of India and to this day most politicians in India are seen only in khadi clothing.
Muga Silk: Muga silk is the only silk in the world which is naturally gold. It is mostly found in the Brahmaputra Valley in the state of Assam. It is believed to be the only fabric considered as an earthly symbol of a goddess ‘Lakshmi’ – the mighty goddess of prosperity. Like all great beauties, muga is not just pleasing to the eye – it is also strong. The lush gold color increases with each wash, and its fibers are much stronger than regular mulberry silk. The gold color comes from a deposit of protein on the outside of the thread.
Muga is a gift from the Indian state of Assam. Apparently, Assamese royalty kept this amazingly unique silk under wraps for centuries – common people and foreigners were not allowed to wear it. Today it is still relatively unknown to the world, partly because it is so difficult to get. Harvested in its wild state only twice a year, muga silk is only available in one tiny valley.
Matka Silk: Matka is made from waste silk. The first & last part of the silk does not have the same shine as the center and is usually disposed of, typically it’s burned or thrown away in a landfill. We yarn dye the “waste silk” into two different colors, twist the two colors into one yarn and then weave it into fabric, creating a tweed-like appearance.
Tussar Silk: Tussar Silk, also known by its Sanskrit name Kosa silk, is produced from Tusser silkworms. Tussar is valued for its texture and natural gold colour, which is unusually rich and deep. It is the primary kind in the silk which has a lustrous, bright, soft-hand feel, and has highest wear resistance in the natural fabric. The durability is due to its short fiber length. The highly textured and elegant dull gold sheen is balanced by the comfortable factor. It is ideal for warmer climates.
Bulk of the Tussar silk production is in India and some forty percent of it is produced in the Indian state of West Bengal alone. A large quantity of this silk is produced in Malda District of West Bengal and Bhagalpur in Bihar, where it is called Bhagalpur Silk. Tussar Silk is also used for Orissa’s Pattachitras and West Bengal’s Kantha stitches.
Linen: Linen is a textile made from the fibers of the flax plant. Linen is labor-intensive to manufacture, but when it is made into garments, it is valued for its exceptional coolness and freshness in hot weather. Linen can not only be used for garments, but also for home products, such as dish towels and bed sheets, and upholstery. The manufacture of linen yarn requires no special design processes. All that has to be determined prior to manufacturing is the thickness of the yarn to be spun. That will depend on the grade of linen in production and the demands of the customer.
