A 100% natural indigo tussar silk shibori kurta. Shibori is a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique, which produces patterns on fabric. Shibori and other textile arts, such as tsutsugaki, were applied to all of these fabrics and dyes. There are an infinite number of ways one can bind, stitch, fold, twist, or compress cloth for shibori, and each way results in very different patterns. Each method is used to achieve a certain result, but each method is also used to work in harmony with the type of cloth used. Therefore, the technique used in shibori depends not only on the desired pattern, but the characteristics of the cloth being dyed. Also, different techniques can be used in conjunction with one another to achieve even more elaborate results. We have taken this Japanese technique and used this in our Indian attire.

A 100% tussar silk pojagi patchwork kurta in natural indigo. Pojagi is an ancient Korean art form. The first documented mention of it was in AD 42, so it is about 2000 years old – much older than western quilts. A pojagi is a cloth that is used to wrap, carry and store things. They are traditionally square. Pojagi were used by all classes in Korean history and made with all different fabrics – silk, cotton, and ramie. The techniques used in traditional pojagi are used today to make many different things – not just wrapping cloths. The purpose of this site is to share both the beauty of the traditional art and also modern interpretations. That is exactly what we have done with this kurta.
